Out of anyone in your address book, with whom would you most like to have lunch today?
Mama. Can I pick where? Mama and I, somewhere in Disney World at a nice little sit down meal - no kids, no spouses, no pets, no cell phones, no rain, no heat, no overly anxious waiter. Am I being a bit too picky? Aw heck, thats as likely to happen as Mama and I getting to sit down to McDonald's today anyway so might as well throw in what I want.
What are five things that make you unique?
1. Hmmm, I can do this wierd thing with my lip. I would post a pic but....well its wierd and unique, but not all too pretty :)
2. I can sing row row row your boat backwards
3. I know every word to Modern Major General (I use this one a lot, but hey, its a talent I tell ya)
4. I'm considered a "professional" quilter because I've been published in a magazine a few times.
5. As was reinforced yesterday outside the butterfly room of the Tennessee Aquarium - I hate butterflies. I consider them little winged messengers of Satan >:)
Wow, am i boring?
What did you learn in kindergarten that you wish you did a better job of applying to the way you live your life today?
You gotta do what you gotta do. This is your life, each day has to be lived no matter what. No sense in clinging to the door, screaming, and throwing up on the floor :) (My teacher used to start putting newspapers down when she saw me coming down the hall).
What lesson did your father teach you that still helps you in life?
Always have toilet paper, paper towels, and light bulbs!
If you knew you were about to lose your voice permanently, what is the last thing you would want to say?
Stop running in the house!!!!
If you had to write your autobiography in 6 words, what would you write?
I sure did try, sometimes succeeded.
What could we do to create a world with less violence?
~Get ready for a whole lot of passionate opinion~
A lot is done to teach our children. We have anti drug programs, anti gang programs, public education taking them up through their late teens, big brothers/big sisters, at risk programs, after school programs, the list could go on all day.
What we don't have though, are programs to strike at the cause of the problem with at risk children. We try to catch them when they are young, but I think we are looking at the base of the problem, rather than the root. There is a problem when a five year old girl thinks it is okay to rifle through her teacher's purse and steal money from her. There is a problem when a seven year old kid stands up to her teacher upon being told to stop talking during a lesson and threatens her with "You don't know who you are talking to." There is a problem when a thirteen year old girl is allowed to leave the house wearing clothing some prostitutes would find too revealing. These kids have been not only shown but TAUGHT that such behavior is acceptable, okay, and in many cases to be glorified.
The problem then, is with the parents. The fact of the matter is that with some children, wolves would do a better job of raising them. We need parental training and I would even argue that we need required parental training for individuals obviously at risk of passing on their lack of morality and judgement to their children. You have a criminal record? Flunk out of school? Take a parenting class. LEARN HOW to raise a child. It is NOT EASY. It is freakin hard!! Your judgement and problem solving skills are challenged on a DAILY basis. My minor is in early childhood education, but even that doesn't make the job any easier.
Folks, they aren't puppies. They aren't barbie dolls that you dress up and push around in a designer stroller for photo ops. They are human beings. They are people They are a grown man who, in twenty years will either treat his girlfriend with respect or get her knocked up and beat her. They are a young woman who walks into a corporate job interview with poise and self confidence - or works twenty hours a week at Mickey D's so she can have enough money for her share of the rent while she sleeps and parties away the rest of her life.
If you think my words sound harsh, go teach in a public school for a day, better yet do it for a week. See the kids who steal things from others, who bully the teachers and their peers. Listen to a six year old who curses under his breath and slings racial insults at others. These are things they bring into school from home.
Anyone who brings a child into the world and thinks they automatically know how to parent it based on the pure biological fact that they were physically capable of bringing a child into this world is a complete idiot.
Having a moral compass*, being able to distinguish between right and wrong, having compassion for others, these are all things children are taught in the first, most formative years of their life. By the time they get to these programs, the groundwork has already been laid and we're just trying to shovel over the tracks which are reinforced each and every day when they leave us.
Want to make the world more peaceful? Bring more peaceful individuals into it.
*My definition of morality does NOT in any way, shape, or form refer to religion.
What do you daydream about? Is it something far-fetched, or something that might actually happen?

Hmm, I daydream about serenity. Quiet time and relaxing. Having a garden tub that I can fill up with near scalding water and bubbles and sinking down into it, staying until the water is cold and my book is finished. Hey, it could happen. :)
